West Ham and West Brom lead the race for Smalling

West Ham and West Brom are leading the race to sign out of favour Manchester United defender Chris Smalling, reports the Sun.  Smalling has supposedly been told by manager Jose Mourinho that he has no future at Old Trafford with the England international falling way down the pecking order under the United boss. His possible availability has alerted a number of Premier League sides, who would be willing to sign the 27-year-old this summer.

However, West Ham and West Brom are said to be fronting the queue to sign Smalling once the transfer window opens with both sides keen to bolster at the back.  West Ham secured the services of Jose Fonte in January, yet the Portuguese centre-back flattered to deceive at the London Stadium under Slaven Bilic, who is prepared to dip into the transfer market to bolster his defence.  West Ham boss Tony Pulis has made no secret of his desire to improve the Baggies’ defence, with the club also linked with a move for John Terry.  Smalling is hoping to be fit for tonight’s Europa League final, where United face Ajax, in what could be his final competitive game for the club.
