Manchester United will reportedly have to pay Bastian Schweinsteiger’s wages in full – worth a total of £13.8m – in order to release the German from Old Trafford. The 32-year-old has been deemed surplus to requirements under Jose Mourinho and has subsequently been forced to train with the club’s reserve team. Although the German has two years left on his contract, Mourinho has allegedly told the player that he has no future at United.
Man United willing to welcome any Schweinsteiger approach. According to Squawka, the German now wants the remainder of his deal paid in full if he were to leave Old Trafford. With 18 months left of his £150,000-a-week contract, it would therefore cost United around £13.8m to force the player’s departure but the club are hoping to a reach a compromise with Schweinsteiger’s representatives. The player stayed in Manchester during the summer transfer window largely on account of his salary which proved too high for a number of potential suitors. But if a pay-off can be agreed between Schweinsteiger and United, the former Bayern Munich will have the chance to play out his final years at a new club – as opposed to languishing in United’s reserves.
It’s understood that he is open to the idea of moving to Major League Soccer in America which follows a statement he released in August in which he revealed that United “will be my last club in Europe”. Despite the ignominy of being shunned by Mourinho, Schweinsteiger has never openly criticised the club and has even outlined his desire to walk out at Old Trafford again before he leaves the club.
