Joachim Low: Ozil took racism issue too far

2 months ago  Raphael   Sport News

After a poor performance at the World cup, Joachim Low escaped being sacked but on of his star players was booed and criticized for his poor outing in the tournament which later decided the fate of the Arsenal midfielder to quit international football.

The German coach also claimed that the Arsenal midfielder has refused to pick his call, return his calls or return his messages following the former Real Madrid player’s decision to retire from international football.

Low has also accused Ozil of “exaggerating” his claims of racism by the DFB (German Football Association).

Ozil criticism started after he was pictured with Turkey president Recep Tayyip Erdogan alongside Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan. Ozil claimed this episode led to him suffering from “racism and disrespect” because of his Turkish roots.

Speaking publicly about the matter for the first time, Low said: “The player has not called me.

In the past that was the case when players retired [from the national team].

“Mesut decided on a different path. I repeatedly tried reaching him via message or phone but that was not possible. I have to accept that.

“My only intention was to prepare best for the World Cup. “This issue also cost us energy because it was always there. It is of course no excuse for our performance. That was not the reason.

“His claims of racism are exaggerated. Nowhere within my team during my time here, there has been not even a hint of racism. I underestimated the case.”
